Pleural Biopsy

A pleural biopsy is a medical procedure where a small sample of tissue is taken from the pleura — the thin membrane surrounding the lungs and lining the chest cavity. It is a crucial test for diagnosing the cause of pleural effusion (fluid accumulation), unexplained chest pain, pleural thickening, or suspected pleural cancers and infections like tuberculosis.

Our Pleural Biopsy Services Include:

Needle Pleural Biopsy:
A minimally invasive procedure performed using a fine needle, often guided by ultrasound or CT imaging, to safely obtain pleural tissue samples.

Thoracoscopic Pleural Biopsy (Medical Thoracoscopy):

A slightly more advanced technique that uses a small camera to directly view and sample the pleura, offering higher accuracy, especially for diagnosing pleural tumors and infections.

When is a Pleural Biopsy Needed?

Investigating unexplained pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs)

Diagnosing suspected pleural tuberculosis or fungal infections

Identifying pleural malignancies like mesothelioma or metastatic cancer

Evaluating persistent pleural thickening seen on imaging tests
